Biographical Information

Mary Edith Gamble was born in Sydney, Ohio, on September 19, 1882. In 1913 she earned her B.S. degree from Purdue University and was hired at the rank of Instructor. She earned her M.A. degree from Columbia University in 1916 and became Assistant Professor in 1919. She was made Associate Professor in 1925 and Professor in 1928, when she became the first Department Head of the Institutional Management Department at Purdue University. Gamble was instrumental in expanding the scope of the hotel, restaurant, and Insitutional Management field, as well as in the development of the School of Home Economics at Purdue University. She was a charter member of the Purdue Women's Club and the Mary L. Matthews Club and a life member of the American Home Economics Association and Purdue Alumni Association. She was also a member of the Honorary Society for Women in Science and a member of Central Presbyterian Church. She died at Comfort, Inc., in Lafayette, Indiana on her 90th birthday, September 19, 1972.
