Biographical Information

Berwyn E. Brown was born and raised in Garrett Indiana, where he graduated from Garrett High School. He attended Purdue University during the mid-1930s and graduated with a bachelor degree from the School of Pharmacy in 1937. As a Purdue student, Brown was an active member of the Army ROTC. Upon graduation, Brown moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan to work for the UpJohn Company. There Brown met Alice M. Thomas, and following a short courtship the two were married in 1940. With the onset of World War II, Brown was called up to active duty by the US Army and was stationed in Maryland, Louisiana, Texas (where their daughter Margaret was born), North Africa, Sicily, and finally Italy. Berwyn Brown was killed in action on the first day of the "Cassino Drive" in Monte Cassino, Italy in January 1944.

Scope and Contents

The Berwyn E. Brown photographs document several buildings and physical structures on the Purdue University campus in 1935. The collection also contains materials depicting Brown's and other Purdue students' activities as military recruits. Of particular note are several photos of the Purdue-based Battery B artillery unit. Types of materials include photographs.
