Biographical Information

Kovacs was born in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary. He passed away in July 2007 in his home in Beverly Hills, California. He was enrolled at Debrecen Theological Seminary in 1953 and received a bachelor's of theology equivalent. He received a master's of divinity in 1964. He went on to study at Indiana University where he received a master's degree in library science, master's in history, a certificate in Hungarian Studies, and Ph.D. in Uralic and Altaic Studies. He was invited to Hungary by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to give lectures. He was named head of the History Department at the Cleveland Public Library. While at this position, he was invited to write a descriptive bibliography on the Hungarian and Polish collections as part of a national survey initiated and coordinated by the Library of Congress. He accomplished that in six weeks with help frm graduate students as well. He then received a position at Purdue University as an associate professor. He was a cinematographer and developed films in the 1970s. His most famous work was Easy Rider (1969) and Five Easy Pieces (1970) which won awards. He was a member of the jury at the 19th Moscow International Film Festival in 1995.
