Biographical Information

Sullivan was born in Patterson, New Jersey on October 3, 1951. Kathryn Sullivan was the first woman to walk in space. She has been on three shuttle missions and in 2004 was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame. In 1988, she served in the U.S. Naval Reserve working as a oceanography officer. She retired in 2006 with the title of captain. She was the director of the Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs while at The Ohio State University. In 1996, she served as president and chief executive officer of the Center for Science and Industry. She served on the National Science Board and is a speaker, geolist, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist.
