Biographical Information
Bourland was born in Kermit, Texas. He received his B.A. in 1965 and B.S. in electrical engineering in 1966 both from Rice University. He went on to receive his Ph.D. in physiology in 1974 from Baylor with Dr. Geddes as his major professor. He went on to establish the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center at Purdue University with his mentor Dr. Leslie A. Geddes and other colleagues, Drs. Willis A Tacker, Jr. and Charles F. Babbs. Bourland helped to find a new way to monitor patients on anesthesia through disposable pneumotachographs while at Purdue University.
