Biographical Information

Claflin was born in Flint, Michigan in November 1921. He was drafted into the Navy around 1945 and served only in the United States. He attended Michigan State and was in pre-veterinary and eventually admitted to the Veterinary College at Michigan State University and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). He then, went to Purdue as a graduate instructor and conducted research for his thesis in the state animal disease diagnostic laboratory and did some teaching. At the time, his research involved respiratory condition of swine. Claflin received a masters and a Ph.D. from Purdue. He became chairman of the admissions committee for the veterinary school at Purdue. Then, he was chairman of what was called the department of veterinary microbiology, pathology and public health and became a full-time professor. Currently, he is a professor emeritus in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology.
