Biographical Information

Martha Dicks Stevens Mills became the first woman to earn an engineering degree at Purdue in 1897.

Stevens was born on July 29, 1875 in Salem, Ohio. Her parents were Moses Cobb Stevens, a Purdue professor in mathematics, and Sarah Dicks Stevens.

She earned a Bachelor of Science (1894), Bachelor in Civil Engineering (1897), and Master of Science (1898) degree from Purdue University. After university, she became a Presbyterian missionary in Tennessee and taught math at Western College.

On June 27, 1907, she married J. Bibb Mills and they had four children together.

Stevens Mills died quite young, on April 20, 1918.
