Biographical Information
Dr. Baumgardner was born on February 7, 1926, on Baumgardner Farm, three miles south of Wellington, Texas. He received his Bachelor's degree from Texas Technological College. He received his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue. He was an instructor with the State Soil Testing Laboratory at Purdue and in the agronomy department. In 1967, he became an associate professor of agronomy at Purdue. He was promoted to professor in 1973. Between 1977 and 1980 he was program leader for the Earth Sciences Programs at the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing.
He was accepted for a three-year appointment with the Methodist Board of Missions to teach soil and crop science at the Allahabad Agricultural Institute, a college in the Gangetic Plain of north central India.
