Biographical Information
H. Y. (Hsu-Yun) Fan was born in Shanghai, China. In 1937 he earned a doctorate in electical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Afterward, he was an assistant professor at the National Ising Hua University in China. Fan was hired by Purdue University as a visiting professor of physics in November of 1948. By 1951, Fan had received the rank of full professor; from 1963 to 1978 he was the Duncan Distinguished Professor of Physics. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1978.
Fan's research areas included innovative work in condensed matter physics and semiconductors. During his career, Fan received numerous awards and international recognition for his scholarly contributions.
