Biographical Information
George Emerson Davis was born in Farmersville, Ohio to a Presbyterian minister.
Dr. Davis was Professor Emeritus in Adult Education at Purdue University. He was a widely-known Hoosier educator, public speaker, and authority in the field of gerontology. As an avocation in his educational work, Dr. Davis made a special study of the life and work of James Whitcomb Riley. He was known as one of the best interpreters of Riley's poetry.
After receiving his early education in Pennsylvania and Delaware schools, he graduated high school in Iowa City, Iowa. Davis received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1917.
In the First World War, Davis served with the 90th Division of the Signal Corps in Germany. Upon his return from the war, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Iowa and earned his Master of Arts degree in 1920.
Davis served for one year as superintendent of schools in Fontanelle, Iowa, before becoming Principal of the high school in Keokuk, Iowa, remaining there for 16 years.
In 1937, Davis earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Iowa. That year, he joined the faculty at Purdue as the Director of Teacher Licensing and Placement. In 1944 he was promoted to Professor of Education. At that time he became Director of the Office of Student Affairs, a position which combined all the duties pertinent to student life and activity on the campus.
Davis moved to a position in Adult Education at Purdue and retired in 1962. He also served as member, officer, and president of the Rotary Club of Lafayette, Indiana.
