Biographical Information
Richard G. Dukes was born in Findley, Ohio in 1871. He attended Depauw University for two years, M.I.T. for one year, and received a M.E. degree from Cornell University in 1896. He was employed successively by the Lyon Supply Company as salesman, by the General Electric Company as engineer, by Worcester Polytechnical Institute, Cornell University and Case School of Applied Science, as instructor, before joining the Purdue staff in 1909 as Professor of Applied Mechanics.
In 1917 he was made Head of the Department, and in 1929 he became the first Dean of the Graduate School. He retired in June 1942. Dean Dukes was active as teacher of the men's Bible Class and elder of the Central Presbyterian Church, and was a member of many scientific, educational, and social groups, such as Sigma Xi, ASEE, Parior Club, etc. Dean Emeritus of the Graduate School, and Mrs. Dukes were killed instantly in an automobile collision east of Jerseyville, Illinois, on August 12, 1950. They had two daughters.
