Biographical Information
Professor H.W. Gregory was born on August 11, 18889, in Sedan, Kansas. He grew up there and in Apache, Oklahoma. He earned his B.S. in Agriculture from Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1912. Gregory then accepted an instructor position in Dairy Products at South Dakota State University and was also in charge of operating the University Creamery. In 1916 he became an assistant professor at Purdue University while pursuing graduate studies. He earned his M.S. from Purdue in 1918, was promoted to associate professor in 1919, and earned the rank of full professor in 1921 when he became Head of the Dairy Department. He continued in this position until his retirement on June 30, 1960.
During his time at Purdue, Professor Gregory was also responsible for the operation of the Purdue University Creamery and the Creamery License Division. He was active in professional organizations, being elected President of the American Dairy Science Association in 1937, serving as the Director of the Indiana Dairy Products Association in 1939, and serving as an advisor to the Indiana State Board of Health for several years.
Professor Gregory was also active in the community. He served as the President of the Purdue University Club from 1938 to 1939 and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Lambda Gamma Delta, and Scabbard and Blade. Gregory was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the First United Methodist Church of Lafayette, the Lafayette No. 123 Order of Masons, the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, the Noon Optimist Club, the Senior Citizens Club, and the Lafayetted Museum of Art.
Gregory married May Kilpatrick in 1914 and had two daughters, Edith Baur and Winifred Troyer. May Gregory died in 1972, and Howard was married again to Mary Zis Mallios in 1974.
