Historical Information

The Walter W. Wade Utility Plant was built on the southern edge of campus in 1962. It was originally referred to as the New Heating and Power Plant or South Heating and Power Plant. It was eventually renamed the Walter W. Wade Utility Plant. It was built in order to increase the Power Plant capacity of the University in order to keep up with the progress of construction. In 1969, this building began taking over the role of the North Heating and Power Plant because it was more efficient. At this point, the North Heating and Power Plant began to be slowly abandoned. Additions were added in 1977, 1989, and 1997. In 1991, the old North Power Plant was taken out of operation.
