 Organization

Dates

  • Existence: 1947 - 1955

Historical Information

The Seneca Dormitories were built in 1947 and served as temporary housing to students. The dormitories were originally Bachelor Officers' Quarters (B.O.Q.'s) and barracks located at the Bunker Hill Naval Air Station in Peru, Indiana (now Grissom Air Reserve Base). They were relocated to Purdue University to fill the need for additional living quarters and classroom facilities after World War II. Female enrollment largely increased between 1944-1945, leading to overcrowding at the university. After the war, many students were also now married and wanted to live with their families. This made grouping of students into dormitories more difficult and increased the need for apartments at the university. The total cost of relocating all of the Bunker Hill dormitories was $234,589.07.
