Experimental Rental Housing (West Lafayette, Ind.)

 Organization

Dates

  • Existence: 1947 - 1954

Historical Information

The Experimental Rental Housing was comprised of 150 temporary hoses built on the south side of State Road 26 west of the University campus. The total cost of building all 150 houses was $400,000. These homes were used for Married Students and Staff Members. These temporary houses were built to meet the growing need of the university after World War II. Female enrollment largely increased between 1944-1945 leading to overcrowding at the university. After the war many students were also now married and wanted to live with their families. This made the grouping of students into dormitories more difficult and increased the need for apartments at the university.
