Dairy Barn (West Lafayette, Ind.)

 Organization

Dates

  • Existence: 1905 - 1960

Historical Information

The dairy barn was completed in 1905 and exemplified the best modern features of barn construction at the time. It replaced the old dairy barn that was destroyed in 1903 after being struck by lightning. There was a judging pavilion connected to the barn that was 50 feet in diameter, steam heated, comfortably seated, and well lit. There are also records of a dairy barn being built in 1910 and additions in 1919, 1921, and 1923. It is unclear if these two building dates were in reference to one building or 2 separate buildings that coincided. An addition was added to the east end of the building in 1919, and in 1921 the southern wing was expanded. Part of the barn was removed in 1951 to make room for the construction of Lily Hall of Life Sciences. The entire building was torn down in 1960.
