The Institute of Noetic Sciences is a parapsychological research institute that was founded in 1973 by former astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, and Paul Temple, an investor who was interested in paranormal phenomena, noetic theory, and the human potential movement. The mission of the Institute of Noetic Sciences is to reveal the interconnected nature of reality through scientific exploration and personal discovery, creating a more compassionate and sustainable world.

The Gathering of the Edlers project was funded by the Fetzer Institute and the Instutute of Noetic Sciences, and was assembled in order to bring together researchers who were pioneers in exploring the therapeutic efficacy of psychedelic substances. The interviews conducted at this gathering culminated into the book Higher Wisdom, edited by Charles Grob and Roger Walsh.
