Purdue University. Honors College

 Organization

Historical Information

Prior to 2005, honors programs at Purdue were offered by individual colleges. These disciplinary honors programs were brought together into a single University Honors Program (UHP) in 2004, with the first class of students starting in the Fall 2005 semester. The UHP had an inaugural class of 75 students, which grew to 147 by Fall 2010.

From 2009-2010, the university conducted an external and internal review of the UHP, both of which recommended creating an Honors College on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. This was proposed to and approved by the Board of Trustees and President in July 2011.

The new Honors College opened to an inaugural class of 556 students in Fall 2013. It was Purdue’s first interdisciplinary, residential academic college. In 2022, the college was renamed to the John Martinson Honors College, in honor of Purdue alumnus John Martinson for his support of interdisciplinary learning at Purdue. As of 2022, the Purdue University Honors College enrolled over 2,700 students.
