Historical Information

The Department of Physical Education for Women was established in 1925. Its establishment was approved on October 8, 1924, by the Board of Trustees and in 1925 part of the Electrical Engineering Building was outfitted to serve as the Women's Gymnasium. Gertrude Bilhuber served as the first head of the department and as an associate professor and Idabell Post was the first instructor.

On November 13, 1975 the Board of Trustees moved to combine the Department of Physical Education for Men and the Department of Physical Education for Women into a single department, renamed the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation Studies, which came into effect July 1, 1976.
